apple EasyPay self checkout a breeze and weird
If you’ve ever been to an apple store, you know they are busy every day, at all times of the day and night. So their self checkout feature is definitely calling to me. Apple has a free app called the “apple store” which enables you to check-out yourself by scanning the item with the app on your iPhone. No need to stand in line to pay.

My kids and I popped in the apple store to purchase a new iPhone cord. We found the item on the shelf, launched the apple store app, scanned the item, signed in to my itunes apple account, and approved the purchase. A receipt was emailed to me. The debit or credit card associated with my itunes account was charged.

Wow! That was easy! Now we can walk out. I couldn’t do it. I could visualize security tackling me on the way out. So, I stopped one of the geniuses and asked him, “how do you know we paid for the item with no bag or receipt in hand?” “We are watching everyone,” he said. “And, if we stop you, you can show us the receipt on your phone, in your email.” Weird.

Too bad I can’t use my iPhone everywhere. Apple came out with Passbook which has lots of participating vendors like Target, Starbucks and some airlines. What’s next? How about being able to send a check from your phone to someone’s email or smartphone. It’s coming.

Click here for a video demo of someone using apple’s self checkout. I should have videotaped myself walking out of the store without going to the cashier. I’m sure the look on my face was priceless!
